Solar Energy mandate for all new California Homes.


California has approved the mandate for solar on all new homes beginning in 2020.

The California Building Standards Commission (CBSC) officially confirmed the new solar standard requirements on new homes in California starting in 2020. In May, the final regulatory vote was confirmed by the California Energy Commission (CEC), making California the first state in the country with the clean energy requirement. The new rules include a solar plus storage option to give consumers more clean energy choices.

Highly energy efficient and solar-powered homes will save families money on their high energy bills from as soon as they walk through their front door. Homebuyers will also have a solar plus storage option, allowing their homemade clean energy to work for them day and night.

Solar energy will help reduce the water heating needs of our buildings.

The standards require California homes and businesses to follow strong energy efficiency measures, lowering their energy use. For the first time, it is required that solar photovoltaic (PV) panels be installed on new low-rise residential buildings beginning January 1, 2020. Including, single family homes and multi-family buildings of three stories or less; therefore apartments and condos are included in the new standards. The vote also provides the homeowner with a solar plus storage option if desired and solar water heating provisions for larger buildings such as a Salinas Dentist, allowing solar energy continue to help reduce the water heating needs of our buildings.

The California Energy Commission (CEC), completed detailed analysis on the new requirements, and gathered official public input from all collaborators

— utility companies, home builders, solar industry, lighting industry. The analysis revealed the new solar requirement will be cost-effective in all climate zones in the state – from the mountains to the Central Valley to the coast. Due to these new standards, homeowners would save $40 dollars each month, or roughly $500 per year. This is because even though the new energy efficiency and solar requirement would add roughly $40 per month to the mortgage payment, but will save the homeowners $80 a month in heating, cooling and lighting bills. 

Apartments and Condos are included in the new standards.

Right now the solar industry installs solar on roughly 150,000 new and existing homes in California yearly, with approximately 15,000 of those projects being new homes. California on average builds 80,000 new homes annually.  Starting in 2020, those new homes will have solar; a four time increase in comparison to today.

How to recycle solar panels


The lifetime of a solar panel system is about 30 years. The number of solar panels being sold and installed in the United States each year is increasing rapidly. As the years go by, there will be a high volumes of silicon solar panels at the end of their useful life and have to be disposed of. Solar panel recycling is at an early stage, but as the market grows it will become an important part that the solar industry will need to tackle.

Recycling & the future of solar

Solar energy is affordable and environmentally friendly – your solar panels will eventually reach the end of their lifetime. After their lifespan, many crystalline silicon solar panels will begin having significant dips in energy production and it will probably be time to dispose of or replace them entirely.

The disposal of Solar Panels is not environmentally friendly. Metals like cadmium and lead are found in solar cells, harmful to the natural environment if they are not recycled or disposed of properly. Also, if solar panels that are thrown away carelessly, they can end up in large landfills.

Recycling solar panels will be economically impactful as well. Rare elements in photovoltaic (PV) cells like gallium and indium are being taken from the environment over time. We need to be able to recover those resources to conserve the limited amount available on earth and re-use them for solar panels and other products. A 2016 study done by the International Renewable Agency (IRENA) estimated that $15 billion could be reclaimed from recycling solar modules by the year 2050.

Given the fast expansion of the solar industry, the number of solar panels in need disposal or recycling in the coming years will continue to increase. Panels will reach the end of their life each year, and even right now, old solar panels are starting to become an issue.

Silicon cells, the most essential component to producing electricity, are a bit of a different story. Silicon wafers are not recyclable like glass and plastic are, so specialty recycling companies are able to reuse silicon cells by melting them down and reclaiming the silicon and various metals. Separating the many materials solar panel are made of and recycling them each in a different way is the complex and likely an expensive process.

Europe has a more developed solar market. European solar panel owners must recycle their panels once they are done using them due to their government regulations. Creating a market for panel recyclers, one of them is is Veolia.

Veolia partners and the non-profit PV Cycle in Europe are in charge of collecting and recycling solar panels. At Veolia, robots separate glass, plastics, silicon and metals from solar panels. Veolia first recycling plant opened in 2018.

Recycle PV

Recycle PV. is a company looking to bring solar recycling to the U.S. The governmental solar recycling requirements are lacking in the U.S., causing the company issues operating on a wide local scale. In the face of this, Recycle PV is teaming up with PV Cycle to help move U.S. panels to recycling facilities in Europe. Even though, Recycle PV, a small operation compared to some European panel recyclers, companies like Recycle PV will very likely see the demand for their recycling services expand over the next few years.

Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA)

SEIA has a PV Recycling Working Group that picks recycling partners offering benefits to its members. These partners offer special pricing to the SEIA members, and in exchange, recycle their solar panels at their special facilities. Cleanlites is an example of one of this partners. They operate recycling facilities that can recycle panels and different solar equipment.


Manufacturers are also increasing their recycling efforts. Companies like First Solar and SunPower have global recycling programs for their clients, they take old solar panels back (through companies like PV Cycle) to the manufacturer to be repurposed or recycled.

It may not be the time to go off grid and live in a cabin – those drastic thoughts should be shelved. As we get on the same page, you can play an important role, simple but important – protect and save the environment, become energy independent, and further strengthen our country from within. Believe it or not, this is the greatest part; you will save thousands of dollars over your lifetime. My Purpose and Approach-A Solar Engineers Perspective (With a Bit of History)


My goal is to give you the information necessary to make wise and informed decisions on the future of your energy needs.

Not only will it be easy to understand in a compartmentalized fashion from the viewpoint of a designer and installer: residential on and off-grid, small and medium-sized commercial, battery systems, smart battery systems, DC optimizers versus microinverters, panel quality and performance, ruggedized solar PV, and a myriad of other general topics.  Including but not limited to the history of solar solutions, its evolution and the bright future ahead. (ha-ha, bright, get it?)

Before I delve into the morass of information ahead, I would like to share the impetus of my desire to try and make a difference the best I can to protect the environment, our health, and to sideline the massive monopolies that currently control a majority of the energy in the United States.

Believe it or not at the age of 16 while confined to the house under doctors’ orders after a severe accident. I had the chance to stop by the library after the doctor for some reading material. I sorted quickly through the box of books for sale. In the box, there was a book called “Critical Path” by Buckminster Fuller. This book would lay the foundation of my thoughts on our planet and its ecosystems going forward, not radicalization, but the clarity of the “Critical Path” we are barreling headlong down.

As a sideline, Buckminster Fuller was so far ahead of his time that a lot of his ideas are still coalescing.

Within this tome of a book, a very simple understanding of how to view the energy available to the denizens of planet earth, there are three types of energy available:

Savings – Nuclear – Current finite resource, by using it we destroy the very fabric of the universe.1

Checking – Fossil fuels – Current finite resources.1

Income – Solar, tidal, wind, and geothermal – Unlimited and forever available.1

Do you get it?

Humans have made it to a point where we do not need to destroy and burn. We can live happy, unrestricted, productive lives without concern for cost and damage to the environment and health. No longer restricted for mega-buck projects for space exploration or remote installations.

What was once a utopian dream is now reality. There is no longer the need to feel the yoke of a utility monopoly. This idealistic society of the future is on our doorstep. So, lets open the door together and see what mother earth has to offer.

This is the 21st century, our thirst for energy should not make us starve.
